Per Ziegler’s latest article on incoming signee Miles Byrd, the Aztecs are recruiting 7’1” junior Center Dennis Evans, from Riverside Hillcrest High. 3 star recruit according to 24/7, #106 in the nation and #13 overall C. 247sports.com/Player/Dennis-Evans-46117498/Couldn’t find much of anything outside of the SDUT article linking us. Not much as far as highlights on YouTube either, but he’s #11 here. Lefty who can shoot, but looks…. Unpolished. Might be a case of showing interest to see how he develops.

7.3 Blocks per game, and he is 15 or 16 years old? Wow

He definitely needs to put on some weight but his shot looks pretty fluid. He doesn't move on defense very well but he's so much taller than everyone else in these videos that he can stay farther away from the man he's guarding. I think the only way it works out for the Aztecs is if his weight and athleticism are delayed enough that the P5 programs aren't interested in him next year.

He sure looks older than 15 or 16. Having strong defender in the post is a huge asset. He may fit in well.

247 Sports: 247sports.com/LongFormArticle/Torrey-Pines-Holiday-Classic-Miles-Byrd-Dennies-Evans-Zoom-Diallo-Jase-Richardson-Jeremiah-Cherry-Styles-Phipps-179215682/#179215682_2"...Still raw and slow in his movements, Evans remains alert in challenging everything that comes his way and securing every ball in his area. Both areas are ahead of his offense, especially in the shot-blocking department, but the southpaw showed nice form on his shot and a developing touch that will be impossible to cover in a few years. What is alarming is how there is hardly any substance when it comes to his recruitment. When looking at him as a prospect, he immediately looks the part as a big man who cannot stop the high major coaches from blowing his phone line. Kansas, San Diego State, and USC have been in to watch him workout but UC-Riverside is the only program to extend an offer to this point. Kentucky and Minnesota have also shown some interest and TCU has attempted at trying to bring the footer to Fort Worth for a visit but the big man is still without a high major offer at the moment. This all should change soon though because Evans brings a tremendous amount of value as a potential defensive anchor at the high major level. He is vocal and has a feel for what needs to be accomplished on both ends of the floor. Overall, he must continue to improve on changing ends with more fluidity but he has enough of what is needed to be a solid contributor for a high major program...."

Maybe the Aztecs can replace Che with Dennis.

Keep this away from Stan, he may not get any sleep thinking about the "What Ifs" having this guy playing the 5.

To see Juvenile growth spurts of 10 inches or plus in only a couple months sometimes bring up other questions like Acromegaly* or Gigantism** which often leads to a host of other injuries followed not soon after. I am not saying that in this case here but something to keep an eye on with this kids progression in sports and in general health and day to day life. This is not just looking at the fact that he is over 7 feet tall it's that he had that major growth spurt all at one time in a very short duration and if he has another (which could happen) all bets are off for this kid to ever lead a normal life. Not a doctor, just have a little bit of understanding of this stuff and want to expose some info for people here. I always enjoy when others here bring in a little info on subjects they have knowledge in. I also really enjoy when posters here provide personal stories about experiences relating to subject matter and SDSU connections (without politics and now Covid) Hope all is well and Happy New Year! ! ! ! ! * Acromegaly is a hormonal disorder that develops when your pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone during adulthood. When you have too much growth hormone, your bones increase in size. In childhood, this leads to increased height and is called gigantism. ** Gigantism refers to abnormally high linear growth (see the image below) due to excessive action of insulinlike growth factor I (IGF-I) while the epiphyseal growth plates are open during childhood. Acromegaly is the same disorder of IGF-I excess but occurs after the growth plate cartilage fuses in adulthood.

yes let's just keep it as our BIG secret Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA and USC know about him. Hard to hide a 7'2" 16 year old kid, averaging 7+ blocks per game.

I watched him last night. He's so tall with really long arms, and he actually moves pretty well considering how big he is. He is a phenomenal shot blocker at the high school level. His team was definitely outmatched by the other team but he almost single handedly kept them in it because nobody could come into the paint (and the other team had some big dudes too). His team also had a decent wing player that helped keep them in it. I left at halftime though so I'm not sure how the second half went, but they were winning at halftime despite being outmatched at pretty much every position except center.
He also was given the ball in the post a few times and had some nice turn around baby hooks that looked smooth. I think he could be pretty good if he keeps improving
Dutch & Dave were there watching too

As it very often happens taller people need the extra time to truly adjust to the College game . Aztecs are smartly red shirting the 6'9" freshman they have this season
They do not get many opportunities to play against taller opponents in HS
Jalen red shirted as did Zylan - although both had an injury to start their first season . Joshua T could have used a red shirt season at Maryland - so has come back for his Super Season .
Deshawn S was a player that could have also used a red shirt season .
How would you compare D. Evans with Cade Alger - walk on at SDSU ?

Definitely going to require some time to grow into his body, but his timing & footwork on D is tremendous for a 16-year old. He's the type of player you monitor to see how his game & body develop, but I do know the SDSU coaches really like him. Another player who would most likely RS, and wouldn't contribute until year 3, which is also the type of player many of the bigger programs pass on.

Even as a DS frosh, if he can play good D... sometimes (injury, fouls) you just really need an extra body down low. Sounds like a good get for us.

Looks like he has a nice shot, however I would redshirt him his first year, feed him a few steaks and have him do a tone of push-ups, leg presses and kettlebell swings.

Looks like he has a nice shot, however I would redshirt him his first year, feed him a few steaks and have him do a tone of push-ups, leg presses and kettlebell swings. I doubt he'd see the floor until year 3. My main question about him is whether he actually likes basketball? He looks, acts & plays like a kid who's only playing the game because everyone thinks at 7'1 he should be playing. I never once saw him smile or look like he was enjoying being out there. Plus, during 3 of their TO's yesterday their coach was PLEADING with him to show effort & put some energy into the game. To quote, "..we're getting our asses kicked & you're not even running up & down the court...play with some energy..." Maybe he comes around, but I just don't see anything other than length, which of course you can't coach. But that's why Dutch & staff get paid the bucks & I just get to watch. They tend to believe he's ahead of Sky at the same age, but very different players.

Alger has great footwork, but not a lot of size - definitely a "4" Evans has incredible height and length, but poor footwork - definitely a "5"
